Granlund to become one company in Finland – prepares to go global

12.6.2023 – Granlund is reorganising its Finnish organisation, with the Group’s 12 subsidiaries to merge with the parent company on 31 October 2023. In the future, Granlund Oy will operate as one company in Finland instead of a group. The goal is to streamline the structure of the company and prepare for internationalisation.

In the future, Granlund’s regional companies in Finland will operate as local business units. “Even though the company’s structure is changing, it will maintain a strong local presence. We will keep serving our customers in 27 localities around Finland,” says Pekka Metsi, CEO, Granlund Group.

The change in the company structure is based on Granlund’s growth and internationalisation goals. In the last few years, Granlund has experienced strong growth through acquisitions, and the objective is to maintain the growth both in Finland and abroad. “We want to prepare for major reorganisations. However, our current company structure does not support global growth. Making our organisation clearer facilitates global growth,” says Metsi.

Initially on course for Scandinavia

Internationalisation is part of Granlund’s strategy, launched in 2020. In the early years, COVID-19 slowed down the internationalisation, but now the plans are moving forward with new momentum. “In the recent years, market changes and the consolidation trend have been fast in the property and construction industry, with major operators gaining strength. We are in this change but with our own special business model,” says Metsi.

“Owned by its employees, Granlund has approximately 300 shareholders. We have a strong vision that our entrepreneur spirit and specialisation in specific operations will also be global success factors. We want to find like-minded partner companies abroad to join our network,” says Metsi.

Initially, the target is Scandinavia, potentially followed by the rest of Europe. “At the moment, we have two offices in Sweden: Stockholm and Lidköping. Our experiences from Sweden are very positive, as a result of which we initially want to expand in the north,” explains Metsi.

Net sale objective increased to 350 million

Granlund’s current strategy is aimed at net sales of around EUR 200 million in 2025. That target is firmly within sights, as the net sales in 2022 amounted to EUR 129 million. In accordance with the new plans, the net sales target has been increased to EUR 350 million by 2027, with the majority of the growth coming from international operations. As we speak, the number of personnel is approximately 1,400. The goal is to double that amount. “We have a strong belief that Granlund’s competence will be increasingly valuable in the future and that specialist operators like us are needed on the market – both in Finland and in Europe,” says Metsi.

Specialisation highlighted in operations

Going forward, Granlund’s operations will continue to be focused on the current business areas, i.e. MEP design; energy, environment and property consulting; development; supervision; and software. Data and digitalisation utilisation, quality indoor environments and user-orientation will be highlighted as guidelines.

“We are going to hold on to our specialisation strategy, which we have found to work well as a model for Granlund. Our main growth sectors include energy services, data centres and other challenging technology projects, such as hospitals and clean rooms, and renovation. We will also continue to actively develop our MEP operating models,” says Metsi.

Granlund’s Finnish subsidiaries will merge with Granlund Oy on 31 October 2023. All employees will continue in the company as old employees. The change does not apply to Granlund Isännöinti Oy or to international companies.
