K-Lab Projektering AB, founded in 2019, specialises in structural design, civil engineering, project design management, and BIM coordination. With a staff of 25 and offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Mumbai, K-Lab Projektering AB has established itself as a key player in the data centre sector.

“The acquisition of a majority stake in K-Lab will significantly strengthen our position in Nordic data centre projects and enhances our ability to serve our international clients. Structural design is a significant area of business growth for us, and this will allow us to offer our clients even more holistic local expertise for data centre projects”, says Timo Ranne, International Business Development Director of Granlund.

We see this new partnership as providing a conduit to utilize Granlund’s expertise to grow our market, and offer total engineering to data centre projects throughout the Nordics.

Graham Edge, Managing Director of K-Lab Projektering AB

“Over the past few years, K-Lab have worked closely together with Granlund on a number of data centre projects in Sweden and Finland. We see this new partnership as providing a conduit to utilize Granlund’s expertise to grow our market, and offer total engineering to data centre projects throughout the Nordics”, says Graham Edge, Managing Director of K-Lab Projektering AB.

Favourable conditions in the Nordic countries attract data centres

The construction of data centres in the Nordic countries has accelerated in recent years, and the rapid proliferation of AI services further strengthens growth prospects. The Nordic countries are a desirable location for data centres due to a reliable electricity grid, a cold climate, a skilled workforce, and low operational costs.

With over a decade of specialist experience in the data centre sector in the Nordics as well as Europe, Granlund provides end-to-end services, including site selection, design development, management of the construction process and finally commissioning as well as ongoing maintenance.

Project management and building services design have traditionally been Granlund’s strengths, but with this acquisition, this expertise has now been expanded to include structural and civil design, further enhancing the company’s holistic service offering. In total, the data centre business employs up to 100 experts out of Granlund’s 1450 employees.

“Data centres represent a key business sector for Granlund, where we are witnessing robust growth. We are delighted to welcome K-Lab to our team, as their expertise will strengthen our position in the Scandinavian market and enhance our structural engineering capabilities”, says Pekka Metsi, CEO of Granlund.

K-Lab becomes part of the Granlund Group

Granlund already has two subsidiaries in Sweden, one in Lidköping focusing on the data centre business, and another in Stockholm specialising in electrical design. The total number of employees in Sweden is about 40 people.

Following the acquisition, K-Lab Projektering AB will be renamed Granlund K-Lab AB and will operate as a subsidiary of Granlund. All current employees will continue in their roles under the new company structure.
