For Granlund, the past year looks good both in terms of net sales, employee and customer satisfaction

1.11.2024 – In early November, Granlund’s year looks like a success, and Pekka Metsi, CEO, believes that, for the construction industry, the only way is up. In addition to increased net sales, the year has also been successful in regard to other key indicators.

Pekka Metsi, CEO, Granlund, has some good news. In the beginning of the year Granlund’s net sales increased by approximately 12%, and the growth rate has remained at 10% in the autumn. The profitability figures are also looking better compared to the previous year. “Considering the construction industry is still trying to climb out of the mire in Finland, the year is looking surprisingly positive.”

According to Metsi, the real estate and construction market has already hit rock bottom in Finland. There is reason to be hopeful about the future as new answers are required for digitalisation, urbanisation and the green transition. In time, the construction industry will also receive a boost once the war in Ukraine comes to an end.

“Young experts should keep in mind that the market will look completely different in 4–5 years’ time. Eventually, Europe will experience an unprecedented construction boom.”

The number of employees increased both through recruitment and acquisitions

During the year, Granlund has conducted a few acquisitions and there are more in the pipeline later in the year. As recruitment has also been successful, the number of employees has increased to approximately 1,500. “Including trainees, we have more than a hundred new faces on our team” says Metsi.

Granlund’s healthy growth figures are explained by several factors, one of which is a steady workload. The production of new housing only makes up a fraction of that workload.

“We have several major hospital and data center projects under way that will carry on for a long time to come. Minor renovation projects for regular customers also generate a significant rolling workload.”

That said, Granlund’s operations have also been partially affected by the challenging work situation in the real estate and construction sector. “In the past year, a few of our units have had to hold local change negotiations due to the reduced workload,” says Metsi.

Once again, Granlund leads the way in MEP

According to recent statistics of The Finnish Association of Consulting Firms (SKOL), Granlund is the biggest operator in all MEP sectors with regard to net sales. “What’s more, we are striving to become the number one MEP design company,” explains Metsi.

In its forte, property consultancy, Granlund is an undisputed number one. Granlund has also ranked third in SKOL statistics in the strongly growing field of construction management. “AINS Group is probably still ahead of us in construction management but their figures were not included in this year’s statistics,” says Metsi.

The statistics are also starting to show that Granlund is strengthening its position in structural design and architectural design through acquisitions and recruitment.

First and foremost, the aim of the change is to seek international growth and larger corporate acquisitions.

The change in ownership is reflected in board work

For Metsi, the outlook for the rest of the year is bright. Amongst other things, future growth is supported by the change in ownership implemented in June. The investment company ICG became a joint owner of Granlund. “First and foremost, the aim of the change is to seek international growth and larger corporate acquisitions.”

In practice, ICG’s involvement is reflected in board work. There are no upcoming changes to our operations or customer work in Finland.

Good things are worth holding on to and, based on the customer feedback collected from hundreds of projects, our NPS score is 67, which is excellent (0–100). Our employees are also happy, which Metsi feels is a sign that everything else is also in order.

“What is especially nice to see is the way our immediate supervisors take care of the well-being of their teams and help them develop.”
