Heat networks

Heat networks

Our heat networks services offer support from concept to implementation. We can help you as an advisor or in a direct delivery role. We can help towns and organisations to grow sustainably and get closer to net zero!

Heat networks

We at Granlund UK are experts at advising on planning and implementing heat networks. A heat network captures or generates heat – and/or cooling – and distributes it to homes and businesses. Particularly in high-density urban areas, they are often the lowest cost solution to decarbonising heating provision. Heat networks can bring investment into communities, create jobs and grow the local economy. We are supporting both local and central government around the implementation of national delivery strategies which going forward will focus on Heat Network Zoning of towns and cities.

Creating modern and efficient heat networks

We work with a range of organisations to plan and develop heat networks and area-wide strategies. We can advise you from initial concepts through to operation state-of-the-art systems – and through every step of the journey.

What are the benefits of heat networks?

  • Reduce carbon emissions at scale to support area-wide net zero strategies
  • Cost-effective heating for existing and new buildings
  • Localise energy supply, which can:
    • De-link costs from volatile energy markets
    • Improve security of supply
    • Provide local employment, new skills and economic growth
    • Facilitate local investment
  • Use energy resources more efficiently
  • Reduce maintenance and repair costs compared to old, inefficient systems

We can support projects through the project development journey, from energy mapping where we systematically analyse and map energy generation, demand, and distribution. We can also support the process of developing and optimising heat network concepts, testing different low-carbon supply solutions and network strategies. This includes considering emerging generation options such as centralised heat pumps, use of waste heat (e.g. waste incineration, data centres, industrial processes and infrastructure such as sewers), centralised solar thermal, and biomass.

We also provide project development services from stakeholder engagement, commercial strategy development, financial modelling, risk analysis, and business case development, to establish robust projects. Through the ‘commercialisation’ phase, we can provide financing, procurement, and contracting, as well as ‘owner’s engineer’ services through construction and operation.  We also offer services to support the optimisation of operational systems.

Heating networks for communities and companies

We assist local entities including local government, community groups and organisations with large estates such as hospitals and universities to plan, build and operate heat networks.

Some examples of our work include recently taking a major heat network in West Bromwich (Sandwell Council) from planning through to commercialisation and supporting the Stoke council to implement a Zonal-scale business case under the UK Government’s Advanced Zoning Programme.

In addition, we acted as a Zoning Technical Consultant for Cheltenham, Norwich and Strood and provided development and regional zoning advice for the West Midland Combined Authority. Alongside this direct development commission, we regularly provide project management support to assist organisations to take opportunities through the feasibility-commercial-construction journey, as efficiently as possible, bringing together our technical, commercial, procurement expertise.
