Stoke has been at the forefront of developments in low-carbon heat networks. They have participated in the Heat Network Zoning Pilot programme (HNZP) and its successor, the Advanced Zoning Programme (AZP). Commissioned by the Department of Energy and Net Zero (DESNZ), we have been supporting Stoke through the AZP programme stage.
We began working with Stoke to review and analyse previous data, fill gaps, and appraise options, risks and opportunities for zonal scale heat network delivery, building on existing deployment plans in a core part of the city. The process began in the first half of 2023, and, by the end of the year, strategic findings were reported to DESNZ, Stoke Council and other stakeholders. The work involved mapping out and testing zonal-scale heat network solutions with heat loads up to 200 GWh/year identified. We also explored low carbon supply (the preferred and selected options being Deep Geothermal and energy-from-waste) and developed a zonal Outline Business Case based around a zonal-level Joint Venture arrangement able to commission-out development stages.
Currently, we are working on a detailed business case and providing related commercialisation support to enable zonal-scale deployment to start construction within the next few years.
